Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) announced his support for H.R. 2954, the Secure Borders FIRST Act of 2007. Sponsored by Reps. Peter King (NY-3) and Lamar Smith (TX-21), the bill will take tangible steps forward to increase the current inadequate border protection as well as to reform immigration laws.

“One of my most important priorities is securing the border of the United States. By not protecting our country, we are opening ourselves up to potential terrorist threats and a continued influx of illegal immigrants. For the safety of my constituents and all Americans, I have cosponsored this legislation because it represents a positive and needed step forward for this country,” Forbes said. “If we value our safety and security, gaining control of our borders is a necessary step to ensure our safety and security, and an important step in controlling illegal immigration.”

H.R. 2954 would strengthen America’s immigration laws in a number of ways, including:

  • Requiring the Department of Homeland Security to gain operational control of U.S. borders within six years.
  • Requiring fencing on the border.
  • Providing an increase in border patrol agents and staffing at port of entries.
  • Requiring expedited removal of certain illegal aliens, including those found within 100 miles of the border within two weeks of entry.
  • Rendering alien criminal street gang members deportable and inadmissible, mandating their detention, and barring them from receiving asylum or Temporary Protected Status.
  • Installing various workplace-protection measures that detect illegal immigrants.
  • Amending H-2A agricultural worker program to reduce illegal overstays and properly document workers.
  • Making a third drunk driving conviction grounds for removal from the United States.
  • Rescinding Executive Order 13166 and requiring that the government conduct its official business in English.

Congressman Forbes continues to be a strong advocate for immigration reform in the United States. He opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants and supports measures, like this legislation, that improve control along the nation’s borders. He serves on the House Judiciary Committee, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law, and the House Immigration Reform Caucus.
