Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) announced today that the City of Petersburg, Virginia will receive a federal grant in the amount of $100,000 for historical streetscape enhancements from the Department of Interior as a part of the Preserve America program.

“This grant is wonderful news for Petersburg as it continues its aggressive plan to highlight the rich history of the city,” Forbes said. “I’m looking forward to welcoming Mayor Mickens to Washington next week as she personally accepts this grant on behalf of the city.”

Petersburg will use the grant funds for identification signs of historic districts and buildings, streetscape enhancements, and the development of walking tours connecting various historic sites. The intent of the project is to promote the city's historic assets and tourism as well as the appearance of the city. Representatives from the City of Petersburg have been invited to accept the grant on behalf of their community at an event on Capitol Hill on July 12 with special guest Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States.

The Preserve America matching-grant program provides funding to designated Preserve America Communities. The purpose of the program is to provide leadership in preserving America's heritage by actively advancing the protection, enhancement, and contemporary use of the historic properties owned by the Federal Government, and by promoting intergovernmental cooperation and partnerships for the preservation and use of historic properties.
