Washington, D.C. – Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04), Chairman of the House Armed Services Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee and Co-Chairman of the Congressional China Caucus, released the following statement on U.S. security cooperation with the Philippines:

"China's behavior in the Asia-Pacific has undermined regional stability and unnecessarily antagonized the Philippines and other partners in the region. The United States has an obligation under its decades-old security treaty with the Philippines to resist acts of aggression against our ally. To deter further aggression from Beijing, the Administration should clarify that while the United States takes no position on territorial disputes in the South China Sea, the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty applies to Philippine personnel, ships, and aircraft in that area. The U.S.-Philippine alliance has been a cornerstone of peace and prosperity in Asia since the end of World War II, and it will remain so for decades to come."
