Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04), Chairman of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement in response to the U.S. Army’s plan to reduce its active component end strength by 80,000 personnel, including 10% active personnel reductions at Fort Lee:

“These short-sighted reductions to the Army are emblematic of an Administration that has allowed budgets to shape its national security strategy rather than crafting a budget that reflects the threats facing the United States,” Congressman Forbes said. “Fort Lee and the Army’s logistics capabilities, which ensure that our ground forces are able to operate anywhere, anytime and against any foe, cannot be allowed to atrophy for the sake of temporary budget savings. With sequestration poised to further reduce the Army by another 100,000 soldiers, this absence of strategic planning will continue to force additional, unwise cuts to a military that has already borne a disproportionate share of reductions over the last four years. I will never stop working to reverse these disastrous cuts and to ensure that our military remains the most powerful fighting force on earth.”
