Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04), co-Chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, released the following statement in regards to the possible execution of Youcef Nadarkhani, an Iranian Christian being persecuted for his faith by the Iranian regime:
"Tomorrow, an Iranian court will demand that Youcef Nadarkhani denounce his Christian faith or else face execution. Nadarkhani has been convicted of abandoning his Islamic heritage and embracing the Christian faith. Unless the circumstances change, death may be his fate. It is appalling that regimes still exist today that execute individuals simply because of their religious beliefs. As the United Nations, the international body created to protect our most fundamental human rights, is conducting its 66th annual session in New York City, a man on the other side of the world faces impending execution for his religious convictions.
We in America who enjoy the fundamental human right of religious freedom must demand Nadarkhan’s full and unconditional release. I call on the Iranian government to immediately release Youcef Nadarkhan and I call on the international community to do everything in its power to save his life. Finally, I urge individuals across America to join me in praying for Yousef Nadarkhan’s safe release. May this tragic case remind us that we must never take our own religious freedom for granted."
