Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) announced today his support of H.R. 1766, Chesapeake’s Healthy and Environmentally Sound Stewardship of Energy and Agriculture Act of 2007, a bill that would help to reduce the negative impacts of pollutant runoff into the Chesapeake Bay.

“The Chesapeake Bay is one of Virginia’s greatest natural treasures. Protecting the Bay from pollutants will preserve this treasure for generations to come,” Forbes said. “This legislation would provide much-needed assistance for Fourth District farmers and residents in their efforts to reduce chemical and sediment runoff. This legislation is a great step towards the preservation and protection of this essential and much-loved natural resource.”

This legislation proposes over 30 changes to current law to benefit the Chesapeake Bay watershed. If enacted, H.R. 1766 would:

- Bring significant new federal technical and financial assistance to farmers and landowners to curb the elevated level of chemicals, including nitrogen, phosphorus, fertilizers, manure and other substances in the Bay watershed;

- Provide incentives for the region’s farmers to produce new sources of renewable energy to both improve water quality and reduce the impact of fossil fuel consumption on the atmosphere; and,

- Help fulfill the federal government’s Chesapeake 2000 agreement, which set specific pollution reduction goals for 2010.

The Chesapeake Bay’s vast watershed touches six states: Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. It is an incredibly intricate ecosystem with more than 3,600 species of plants, fish and animals. This legislation is being considered for inclusion as a provision to the 2007 Farm Bill that is making its way through Congress.
