Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) announced today his subcommittee assignments for the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) and House Judiciary Committee for the two-year 113th Congress. Forbes has been assigned Chairman of the HASC Subcommittee on Sea Power & Projection Forces and as a member of the Readiness Subcommittee. He will also renew his membership on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations and the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice.
“It is an honor to serve on four subcommittees that are posed to address some of the most important issues facing our nation. I look forward to working on behalf of the people of Virginia’s fourth District on the issues that matter most to them.”
The HASC Sea Power and Projection Forces Subcommittee is responsible for the research, development acquisition, and sustainment of Navy and Marine Corps programs, Naval Reserve equipment, and the Air Force's Long-Range Bomber (LRS-B) and tanker programs. The Readiness Subcommittee oversees military readiness, training, and logistics, military construction, installations and family housing issues, and the BRAC process. Congressman Forbes has served on the HASC since taking office in 2001. He had been the Chairman of the Readiness Subcommittee since 2011 and Ranking Member of the Readiness Subcommittee from 2008-2010.
“Virginia is home to some of the most critical Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard facilities in the country. Unfortunately, defense cuts over the last four years and the looming threat of sequestration have put the national security of the Nation in a perilous position. In my role as Chairman of the Sea Power & Projection Services Subcommittee and as a member of the Readiness Subcommittee, I will provide strong oversight of the negative repercussions of this Administration's defense cuts and work to do everything in my power to blunt their impact."
The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations has jurisdiction over the Federal Criminal Code, gang violence, drug enforcement, sentencing, internal and homeland security, cybersecurity and criminal law enforcement. The Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice has jurisdiction over constitutional amendments such as the Balanced Budget Amendment, constitutional rights, Federal civil rights, state of religious freedom in America, medical malpractice, parental rights and tort liability.
Forbes previously served as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. His involvement in these two subcommittees will allow him to continuously defend the rights of his constituents and fight for their protection.
