Forbes Calls on NYC Mayor Bloomberg to Include Prayer at 9/11 Memorial Service
Washington, D.C., Sep 1, 2011 - Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04), co-Chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, announced today that he sent a letter to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg calling for the inclusion of prayer at next week's 10th anniversary memorial ceremony of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
"On September 11, 2001, our nation prayed. Victims of the attacks prayed for help; family members prayed to be reunited with loved ones; first-responders prayed for strength and wisdom as they risked their lives; millions of Americans asked God for comfort, protection, and peace. And on September 11, 2011, our nation will pray once again. While I was troubled to learn that Mayor Bloomberg excluded clergy from officially participating in the tenth anniversary ceremony, I am encouraging him to include a prayer to provide Americans the opportunity to publicly turn to God for solace and strength as we have done throughout our nation's history," said Forbes.
New York City Hall officials coordinating the ceremony have confirmed that religious leaders will not be invited to participate in the 10th anniversary memorial ceremony and press reports indicate that a prayer is not currently slated for inclusion on the event’s agenda. The event will be televised nationally and feature appearances by victims' families, President Barack Obama, former President George W. Bush, and other current and former elected officials.
